Artificial intelligence is everywhere right now—from the apps on our phones to the editing tools creeping into our workflows. For filmmakers, it raises the same question we ask in this episode of Get in the Van with Darren & Dave: should we panic, or should we prepare? Watch the full episode on youtube and read the accompanying blog below.

Why AI Won’t Replace Storytelling

Every time a new technology comes along, filmmakers worry about losing their place. We saw it with the shift from film to digital, with drones, and even with YouTube itself. Each innovation disrupted the industry, but none of them replaced the heart of storytelling.

What AI can’t replicate is the human connection—earning trust in an interview, capturing a fleeting moment on location, or shaping a story that moves people. For documentary filmmakers, that’s still the core skill that sets us apart.

The Real Risks for Filmmakers

That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to worry about. AI is already reshaping parts of video production and editing:

  • Job disruption. Certain editing, transcription, and visual effects tasks may be automated.

  • Oversaturation of content. With AI making it easier to produce video, standing out will get harder.

  • Shifting client expectations. Budgets may shrink if clients assume “AI can just do it.”

Understanding these risks helps us prepare instead of panic.

Where the Opportunities Are

Filmmakers who adapt early will be the ones who thrive. Here’s where we see opportunities:

  • Workflow efficiency. AI tools can cut down on time-consuming editing and organization.

  • Creative experimentation. Generative tools can help visualize ideas, pitches, or storyboards.

  • Doubling down on human skills. Interviewing, directing, and earning trust are now more valuable, because they can’t be automated.

For documentary directors, DPs, and editors, the winning strategy is to combine new tools with timeless craft.

Our Take: Preparation Over Panic

In the video above, Dave and I unpack what AI really means for filmmakers. It’s not a tech demo—it’s a raw, behind-the-scenes conversation about fear, resilience, and the future of our industry.

The bottom line: panic doesn’t help. Preparation does.
