Kat’s project “examine[s] and reclaime[s] a sense of self, the intimacy of the shared experience, and diasporic longing.”

Early Light Media has a big reason to celebrate — Animator Kat Navarro is about to be an MFA graduate!

For the last three years, Kat has completed her degree at Towson University while working at Early Light Media. She developed and created many experimental animation installations as part of her thesis. She dedicated the last year to researching, documenting, and creating work around her family’s immigration from the Philippines.

Her thesis is now on display at the Holtzman MFA Gallery in Towson’s Center for the Arts. Kat will share the gallery with two of her fellow graduating cohort: Mia Pisano, a fibers artist, and Amelia Grace, a children’s books illustrator. The exhibition’s opening will take place on October 26 from 7:30 to 9 pm — expect to see a few familiar ELM faces in the crowd, supporting Kat!

Kat started her thesis by revisiting the letters between her family in the US and her mother, who remained in the Philippines for 8 years on her own before reuniting. The installation includes a series of loops to reflect the science of memories and fragmenting the past based on stories and myths.

This milestone involved many late nights and weekends spent working for Kat, as she balanced her MFA with her responsibilities at Early Light Media. We are grateful to have had a front row seat to watch Kat complete her thesis and reach new heights as an animator. Our video production company deeply values the creative process, and we love watching our team members push themselves to grow as artists and filmmakers. Kat’s hard work the past three years encapsulates this.

We cannot wait to view Kat’s thesis on display at Towson University, and we hope you will join us, too. We are so proud of everything Kat has accomplished the past three years, and grateful to be a company filled with team members like Kat, who are constantly striving to be exceptional storytellers. Congratulations on this incredible achievement, Kat!

See Kat’s Work!
