In the world of creativity, individuals like David Larson shine brightly as a source of inspiration and innovation. As an ELM Director and Co-founder, Dave’s journey reflects a fusion of passion, dedication, and an unwavering pursuit of creative excellence. Let’s delve into the essence of Dave’s creative process, his experiences, and the significant impact he has had on our organization.

“We have so many talented people in this company that bring their own unique perspective to projects and creative. Having access to their creative minds allows me to take risks and reach for more ambitious projects because I know that through collaboration and teamwork, we can figure anything out.”

In Dave’s workspace, instrumental music sets the tone for focused creativity. He starts his day with a workout to clear his mind and removes distractions like his phone. In this serene environment, ideas flow freely without judgment or limitation.

“I also pull inspiration from tons of different areas. Books and movies are often great inspiration for me. I also draw inspiration from my partners and co-workers who are always pushing the boundaries of what’s possible creatively”.

When encountering a creative roadblock, Dave believes in taking a break to gain a fresh perspective. Whether it’s a day off or a short walk, he finds that stepping away from the problem often leads to solutions.

Every passion project we undertake at ELM has proven to be worthwhile. Despite being self-funded and time-consuming, they enable us to create impactful work that we’re passionate about, often opening doors to new opportunities. For instance, “Throw” was a significant milestone for us, requiring a substantial investment of time and resources. Yet, it remains a cornerstone of our success, with potential clients still citing it as the reason for reaching out to collaborate with us.

Working on the Hakki project at ELM was incredibly fulfilling for Dave because it allowed him to combine his love for storytelling with making a meaningful impact. It was a beautiful human-driven story that raised awareness of an often overlooked topic. Sharing Hakki Akdeniz’s journey from homelessness to owning his own pizza shop was inspiring. Meeting Hakki himself reminded Dave of the power of storytelling to connect with others on a deeper level.

To be more creative at work, take Dave’s advice: pursue big ideas fearlessly.

“Don’t get caught up in limiting your ideas just because they might seem too challenging or impossible. Most of the time, I think it’s about eating the elephant one bite at a time. Meaning, just tackle what you can now and take small steps towards your big idea.”

Dave’s story serves as a reminder that creativity is not merely a skill—it’s a mindset, a journey, and a testament to the limitless potential of the human spirit. As we navigate our own creative paths, let’s draw inspiration from Dave’s experiences and by daring to dream big and taking calculated risks, we can unlock new possibilities and make meaningful contributions to our work.
